The East Surry Cardinal boys varsity basketball team aced the Falcons 73-34 and contributed a great team effort to gain last night’s victory.

Varsity Cardinal Head Coach John Anderson said, “We brought the team off the bench tonight and they did not miss a beat. Every stat we had was balanced.”

The Cardinals shot 66 percent from the floor against the Falcons and “it was done with team chemistry,” Anderson said.

Seth Brim led in scoring for the Cardinals, sinking 16 points against the opponent. Brim proved to be a double threat in both post and perimeter play against the Falcons. He was 5 of 7 from the free throw line and hit a long shot from the outside during the first quarter.

At half-time the Cardinals led by 24 points. Tyler Pardue, Eli Gilbert and Brim had contributed a total of 21 points from the post before the half ended, said David Johnson, assistant coach for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals took advantage of the opportunities that came their way against the Falcons, especially during the first half. Good drives and passes by Scott Meredith and others on the team continued to advance the large Cards lead.

The team was scored an impressive 13-15 from the free throw line in the second quarter, Johnson said.

In a particular interesting Cardinal drive and characteristic of the Cardinals creating and making the most of any opportunity, Carson Long stole the ball from the Falcons, then shortly thereafter, Gilbert took the opportunity to score three the old-fashioned way. He drove to the post and after being fouled roughly by a Falcon defender, Gilbert pushed into the post and got the basket in. He then promptly scored his free throw shot for a combined total of three points.

Defensively, the Cards continued a game-long press to get the ball back throughout the entire game. They did it with a lot of help from Tra’von Ricketts who played very well on the defensive side of the ball, said Anderson. Rickett’s registered the game high in rebounds hauling in six for the team. Scott Meredith led in steals and recorded five.

Meredith and Drew Alley both had six assists last night for the Cardinals

The game scorers were: Seth Brim, 16 points; Tyler Pardue, 13 points; Scott Meredith, 11 points; Eli Gilbert, nine points; Carson Long, seven points; Drew Alley, three points; Ethan Nickels, three points; Jacob Bowman, three points; Devon Benton , three points; Austin Johnson, two points; Bryan Banks, two points; and Lamar Shuff, one point.
