LOWGAP — The cause of an early morning fire which destroyed a storage building and workshop beside a residence in the Lowgap area remains under investigation.

According to Pine Ridge Assistant Fire Chief James Johnson, the location of the fire has been identified as next to 354 Ivy Green Trail off of Pine Ridge and Troy Holder roads. Skull Camp Fire Chief Josh Moose sets the time of the fire at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Surry County Fire Inspector Jason Burkholder said the fire departments responding to the blaze included Cana, Va., Franklin, Pine Ridge and Skull Camp as well as several rescue squads standing by for assistance as well. No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Burkholder identified the property owner as Sam Chappell and said some all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles were rolled out of the building and saved while others were destroyed by the fire. He said it appears the workshop and storage building was also a garage where Chappell rebuilt and repaired older model motorcycles. Burkholder said Chappell did have insurance on the building.

An insurance adjuster had not arrived on site to determine a dollar amount for the damages late yesterday. Burkholder said the cause of the blaze has not been determined. He said the structure was totaled and the fire appears to have started at the back of the building.
