DOBSON — A veteran local educator was honored Monday night at the Surry County Board of Education’s regular meeting for being named 2012 Subway School Health Champion of the Year.

Sherry Smith has been employed with the county schools as a physical education teacher for 17 years, 12 of which have been at Franklin Elementary School.

“Sherry Smith is a person who works relentlessly toward achieving goals she has set for herself or goals set by her school and county administration,” explained county schools Director of Communications, Instructional Media and Teacher Quality Sonia Dickerson. “She knows her students and their Body Mass Index (BMI), and she and the school nurse, Jan Casstevens, work together to help each student understand their body mass index. Students at Franklin are required to keep a healthy activity log which Sherry initiated.”

Smith also is credited with starting the Franklin Fit Moments program. Dickerson said each day Smith chooses a different physical education class to participate in a 15-minute video demonstrating a variety of activities. The video is made in conjunction with the school media specialist and set to classrooms on SKYPE. Classroom teachers use this Fit Moment video throughout the day to energize students.

Dickerson said Smith also serves on Franklin’s School Health Wellness Team and the countywide Student Health Activities Committee. She said Smith was the educator who had the idea for all county schools to participate in All Children Moving Simultaneously (ACES), in which students across the district participate in a three- to five-minute physical activity at the same time.

“On June 6, Mrs. Smith was joined by Jan Casstevens as Franklin Elementary received the first-ever school Zone Health Award presented by North Carolina Prevention partners for reaching the highest standards in student wellness and obesity prevention,” continued Dickerson. “She was very instrumental in the fact Franklin Elementary scored all A’s on the zone health assessment. With the help of the $1,000 Zone Health Award, Franklin Elementary plans to turn one of its classrooms into a rainy day wellness room.”

Smith received another $500 as the recipient of the Subway School Health Champion Award and all Franklin students received Subway gift cards. Dickerson said only six persons were chosen to be recognized for the award. Smith said she met Jarrod, the Subway spokesperson, at an awards dinner for recipients.
