Incumbents held their seats across Surry County Tuesday, although a couple of the elections were close.
In the narrowest race of the day, incumbent Paul Johnson defeated David Diamont by less then 5 percentage points — 14,718 votes to 13,386 votes for the East District seat on the Surry County Board of Commissioners.
Larry Phillips held onto the Mount Airy District board seat over John Collins, pulling 16,534, or 60 percent, of the votes. Collins garnered 10,837 votes in the race.
In the register of deeds race, Carolyn M. Comer received 15,719 votes, or roughly 55 percent of the total votes cast, compared to challenger Todd Harris’ total of 12,654.
Republican Shirley Randleman easily won the N.C. State Senate District 30 seat, pulling in 16,988 votes, or nearly 61 percent of the ballots, compared to 10,944 for Democrat Ric Mashall. Don East, who had served in the seat for seven terms and was seeking re-election, died Oct. 22, but his name remained on the ballot. District Republicans chose Randleman to take his place in the race, and she received all votes cast for East, including those cast during early voting prior to his death.
In the only other contested Surry County race, Glenn Pruitt defeated Bradley Boyd for Soil and Water Conservation District supervisor by a vote of 11,539 to 8,795.
In Pilot Mountain, Dwight Atkins and Cordie East Armstrong easily won the two open seats on the board there in a six-way race. Atkins claimed 398 votes, or 34.34 percent of the total cast, while Armstrong received 284, or 24.5 percent, of the vote.
Scott Needham pulled in 163 votes, Douglas Brannon received 151, Larry Wall garnered 99 votes, and George Gray received 62 votes.
Final election results were delayed throughout Surry County until after 10 p.m., more than three hours after the polling stations closed, while awaiting the results of one precinct. All totaled, 29,381 votes were cast, which is about 65 percent of the county’s’ 44.864 registered voters.
