Paul Davis, secretary of the Mount Airy Country Club Board of Directors, receives special recognition from Mayor Deborah Cochran at a council meeting Thursday, also attended by other representatives of the country club. It was highlighted as part of an ongoing city government program honoring older local businesses. The club was conceived by a group of golf enthusiasts headed by J. Graham Harrison, which led to 78 people pledging to buy $30,000 worth of stock and the acquisition of a 125-farm to accommodate the facility. A grand opening was held in June 1928 for the country club, which grew over the years and became a hub for numerous social activities.
