PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Cardinals varsity softball team won its home opener 5-4 against Ledford High School on a very cold and windy Wednesday night in what Coach Derrick Hill described as a gritty performance by the team.

The play of the game came in the fifth inning when Emily Cummings got a hard hit to outfield that brought a Card home, giving the Cards their first lead of the game by a score of 4-3 over Ledford, and then a hit by Kristen Cummings extended the lead 5-3, bringing Barker home.

Then in a show of defensive force, the Cards held the lead in the seventh inning after Ledford had scored one more run in the sixth making the score Cards 5-4. Barker threw a strike out in the last critical moments.

Barker, who started at short stop, threw a strike out against Ledford when bases were loaded by Ledford runners. The outfield then rose to the occasion once again during the game for the Cards catching some hard fly balls sent their way by Ledford with bases still loaded for the win.

Hill said the win was an exclamation point for the Cardinal team beating Ledford who beat North Davidson, 4A State Champions, last Friday.

“If we were able to outlast a team like Ledford, that tells me about our grittiness,” said Hill.

Hill said this Cards team has the capacity to play many positions and in fact that proved a strength against Ledford.

Hill said the team has five girls who can pitch but show strength at different positions on the field, also.

The Cards will play West Stokes Thursday in King.
