Surry County has a new resident who ushered in the new year for her parents early Tuesday morning at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

According to first-time parents Christan Jeananne Hayden and Christopher Clifford Pike, their daughter, Maci Leigh Pike, arrived New Year’s Day at 5:30 a.m. The little girl weighed 6 pounds, 13.5 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches in length.

Hayden said this was the first child for the couple and they chose Maci because they liked it and thought it was a pretty name.

Both said the delivery had went smoothly but left them exhausted. Pike had only just returned to the room following what he called a “power nap” taken when he went home to get a few things for his new family. Hayden said the hallway filling up outside the room Tuesday afternoon was mostly relatives, many on their second visit of the day.

“It seems like they all just decided to show up at the same time,” said Hayden, laughing. “I didn’t have any problems during the pregnancy or the labor. She was supposed to arrive on the 29th but other than that, things were pretty much on schedule. She has a beautiful head of hair. None of the rest of the girls in my family started out with a head of hair like this.”

Hayden said the first hint she had that Maci was about to make her way into the world was a case of heartburn.

“I’m starting the new year out exhausted,” said Hayden, grinning as she glanced at Maci. “I am so excited to have her here. I loved feeling her in my belly, but those contractions. I almost took his (Christopher’s) hand off.”

Pike said he was tired but still running on adrenaline after the birth of his daughter.

“I am looking forward to having a daddy’s girl,” commented Pike as he held the tiny baby. “She’s (Maci) not doing too much. She just likes to sleep now.”

The couple said they live in the Pine Ridge area of Surry County. They appeared to be simply enjoying introducing their infant to her new family which began filing into the small hospital room.

“It’ll be family all day today,” said Hayden. “This is truly a blessing for me.”
