DOBSON — NASCAR fans might want to mark Thursday on their calendars to travel to the Dobson campus of Surry Community College for a special appearance.

Petty’s Garage, racing legend Richard Petty’s high-performance speed shop, will be on the campus of the college on Thursday.

The Petty crew and other staff experts will bring in the Performance Tour rig to display, featuring several custom vehicles and parts.

The public is invited to visit the rig and learn about new opportunities awaiting at the community college.

According to SCC spokeswoman Marion Venable, some exciting things are happening.

“The college has joined forces with a stock car racing legend to train students interested in pursuing careers within the automotive service industry,” she said.

Surry Community College is now an “education affiliate” of Petty’s Garage, LLC, owned by the NASCAR Hall-of-Famer.

“Students will be selected to participate in the Student Acceleration Program by Petty, based on set criteria,” Venable said. “(They) will have the opportunity to job-shadow and learn firsthand from the Petty team.”

“We’re excited about the opportunity to broaden our connection with this legendary North Carolina family, and feel our students are going to benefit tremendously from the learning experiences our partnership with Petty’s Garage will offer,” said Michael Miller, dean of business, technologies and health sciences.

Located in just down the road in Randleman, Petty’s Garage is the driver’s high-performance speed shop that takes vehicles to the next level by providing a complete custom solution. The facility was once the home of the legendary garage that rolled out winning stock cars for 60 years.

Miller said this initial step is just the beginning for the college.

“We want to farm partnerships with companies like Petty’s Garage,” he said. “This… will lead to unique educational opportunities for the students of Surry Community College.”

The high-performance rig will be on display Thursday in the parking lot next to the gymnasium from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

For more information or directions, contact Miller at 386-3235.

Is gay Boy Scout issue germane to the Real World?
Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
