DOBSON — East Surry beat Starmount, but fell to Surry Central in wrestling.

In Tuesday’s late matches, the Cardinals beat the Rams by 19, then lost to the Golden Eagles by 18.

“Our kids wrestled really well against Starmount,” said Coach Darrin Haywood. “We didn’t match up as well with Surry Central.” However, he said his squad battled hard in both matches.

In the first match Tuesday, the Rams edged the Eagles by just two points.

Then Starmount faced East Surry. Both teams gave up forfeits in two weights. Then the Cards won seven of 10 matches for a one-sided victory.

“Andrew Koslow at 126 has wrestled really well,” said Haywood. The sophomore has worked hard in practice and earned a starting spot.

He went against Cody Leonard, a senior who won 17 matches last season. He earned a decision without giving up a single point at 5-0. He also received a forfeit against Central.

The top two weights performed very well, the coach noted.

Jacob Chattin and Joshua Stevens had trouble getting mat time last year behind state qualifiers Greg UpChurch and Chad Woods. However, all that time in practice going against those standouts is paying off now.

Chattin (220) pinned Ken Kelly in 2:42, then against Central he pinned Humberto Moreira in 1:44.

Stevens pinned the Rams’ John Wooten halfway through the first period.

The Rams’ Sergio Sarinana looked good against Central, but East’s Keanu Love handled him well for a 10-3 decision.

Keanu has improved to the level that the coaches expect points from him every meet, said Haywood.

“That’s a lot of pressure to put on a kid,” he admitted, but the junior has stepped up and become a vocal leader on the team.

Love is one of the co-captains this season along with Cody Gaskill, Eddie Nunez and Jimmy Speer.

Nunez (106) didn’t get to wrestle as he drew a forfeit from both teams.

Jimmy Speer (160) earned a pin late in the first period, but Gaskill (195) didn’t wrestle Tuesday.

Timmy Norman (120) earned a second-period pin over Nazario Sarrano.

Austin Jessup (138) pinned Austin Baucom in the third period.

In the match between the Cards and Eagles, Central gave up three forfeits and East just one, so the Cards had an 18-6 advantage before any of the matches took place.

In the 10 weights that wrestled, the Eagles won eight.

East’s Love pinned Tyler White in 2:33, and Chattin pinned Moreira in 1:44 to give the Cards 12 points.

Central’s Garrett Johnson (113) pinned Janelly Durr in the third period. Kevin Pack (120) pinned Norman in 1:27.

Mason Snow (132) earned a 5-1 decision over Eddie Scott.

Mason has been under the weather, yet still came out and took care of business, noted Coach Stephen Priddy. He was so wiped out after Tuesday night that he spent Wednesday in bed.

Bryant White and Nathon Bautista also have been sick. White wrestled Starmount, but sat out against East Surry. Bautista sat out both matches.

Raymond Dance (138) pinned Jessup in 2:59.

Uriel Secudino downed Christian Cook in 1:41.

Uriel looked good against Starmount, but he picked up his energy and speed of movements even better against East Surry, said Priddy.

At 160, Zack Martin earned his second win of the night by topping Speer 17-11.

Speer is one of East’s best wrestlers, and Zack stepped up big-time in this match, said the coach.

After limping off the mat holding his right leg, Jared Dimmette (170) came back against East to earn a first-period pin against Mitchell Flynt.

At heavyweight, Wes Brown remained unbeaten as he pinned Stevens in 1:50.

Brown has pinned all of his regular-season opponents in the first period. He also won first place in the Blackhawk Invitational Tournament after recovering from a broken leg in the first game of the football season.

As one rival coach said, no team around here has a guy who can match Wes’ speed and strength. He may find some competition this weekend when the Eagles take part in the Mount Tabor Super Duals.

Central will face nine teams in two days over Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Eagles face North Wilkes, Starmount, East Wilkes and Wilkes Central.

On Saturday, they take on three 4A schools: East Forsyth, Northern Durham and Leesville Road. They also face Forbush and Lexington.

The Northwest Conference only gets one automatic berth to the 2A playoffs, so the Eagles have to battle North Surry and West Stokes, Priddy explained. There are only two wild cards given out for the whole western half of the state, so Central (8-2) will have to build up an impressive resume, and this weekend could help.

East Surry travels to South Stokes, along with North Surry, for the Joe Via Invitational Tournament.

Is gay Boy Scout issue germane to the Real World?
Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
