Pilot Mountain and Elkin officials are among other attendees at a press conference at the General Assembly recognizing Elkin as one of North Carolina’s Great Places for 2013. RALEIGH — Representatives from the town of Pilot Mountain attended the North Carolina League of Municipalities Annual Town Hall Day on March 27.
Town Hall Day draws elected officials, business and civic leaders, and municipal staff to Raleigh to visit state legislators and discuss issues of importance to municipalities. About 500 municipal leaders from across the state attended Town Hall Day.
Mayor Pro Tem Linda Needham, Commissioners Gary Bell, Cordie Armstrong and Dwight Atkins, and Town Manager Homer Dearmin spent the day in Raleigh, meeting with state representatives and senators. Highlights of the day included a meeting with Rep. Sarah Stevens in her office that included representatives present from Dobson and Elkin, and meeting with Sen. Shirley Randleman to discuss the future of state-collected local revenues.
The Pilot Mountain delegation also took time to support Elkin Mayor Lestine Hutchens and Town Manager Lloyd Payne at a press conference where Elkin was recognized as one of seven “Great Places in North Carolina” for 2013. Representatives from Mount Airy’s Parks and Recreation Department also attended the event.
“It was an honor to represent the town of Pilot Mountain on behalf of our citizens, and personally visit our North Carolina legislators,” said Bell. “It was also a great opportunity to meet and learn from other municipal officials from across the state.”
During Town Hall Day, attendees met one-on-one with their General Assembly representatives and attended both House and Senate sessions. Gov. Pat McCrory also addressed attendees and discussed the goals for his administration. In addition, N.C. Rep. Ruth Samuelson, the Republican conference leader, and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger spoke to Town Hall Day attendees.
“Decisions made at the General Assembly are felt across the state, by municipalities of any size,” said Art Schools, Emerald Isle mayor and NCLM president. “Town Hall Day is an opportunity for municipalities to band together and let members of the General Assembly know that we want to partner with them to ensure that our cities, town and main streets are vibrant and thriving.”
