Jessica Boyd, Surry Runnin’ Patriots, was named MVP of the Salem Invitational that ran Friday and Saturday in Winston-Salem.
WINSTON-SALEM — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls team won both games in the Salem Invitational basketball tournament this weekend.
The home-school team won Friday and Saturday to take first in the four-team event at Salem Baptist.
Jessica Boyd was named tournament MVP. She posted 17 points and eight boards in a 49-47 squeaker with Walkertown High School. Then she had 12 points in a 42-34 win over the host school.
Sydney Bedsaul also made the five-player all-tournament team. She had nine points on Friday and 10 points on Saturday.
In Friday’s game, the Runnin’ Pats were down by eight points with about three minutes left in the third quarter.
Surry finished the period with a 14-3 run to take a three-point lead.
The game stayed close, and Walkertown tied the game with about a minute left.
Joye Harrison had the ball and saw Kaylee Paris make a cut and get space from her defender, according to Coach Todd Hill. Harrison hit Paris with a pass for the clinching layup with 20 seconds left.
Paris finished with nine points. Kelsey Cave had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Salem Baptist beat Lee Christian to advance to the finals.
Surry ran out to a nine-point lead at the half, 28-19, said Hill. That lead grew to 14 in the third quarter before the squad got too careless with the ball.
Hill said the Runnin’ Patriots won despite committing a whopping 27 turnovers.
That allowed Salem to close within 36-34.
Then Surry finished the game with an 8-0 spurt as Salem sent the girls to the foul line.
After Boyd’s 12 and Bedsaul’s 10, Harrison had six points. Cave had five points and 13 rebounds. Paris had five points and five steals.
