Mount Airy’s Shay Wilson, seen wrestling West Stokes on Monday, helped the Bears sweep a tri-match Tuesday. Mount Airy has reached 30 wins in a season for the first time in a decade.
Mount Airy breezed through a tri-match with North Stokes and Atkins, improving the wrestling team’s record to 30-12.
This is the first time the Granite Bears have reached 30 wins in a season in more than a decade.
The Bears defeated the Vikings 70-6, giving up just one match. Then they beat Atkins 82-0.
Both of the opponents are where the Bears were two years ago: the squads just aren’t full enough to compete at every weight class. Atkins gave up eight forfeits and North Stokes seven.
Alex Howard (106), Daniel Sechrist (113), Jackson Blizzard (120), Tyler Duty (126) and Zaqwan Dobson (220) didn’t have the chance to wrestle as they all received forfeits in both matches.
Against the Vikings, Shay Wilson (138) and Nick Kendall (195) also received forfeits.
In the seven matches that were held, the Bears took six.
Freshman Cameron Pack (132) was in full control of his match, earning a 10-0 major decision.
At 145, Triston Mabry pinned Trinity Fain just before the final buzzer.
At 152, Andrew Moore and Hunter Moorefield went to overtime before Moore pulled out the sudden-victory win at 9-7.
Andrew was down early as the Moorefield kid was doing better on his feet, said Braune. Then Andrew came back to force overtime, then won it.
North Stokes scored its only points at 160 where Matt Chesnet pinned Austin Branch at the end of the first period.
The best matchup of the night came at 170 where the Bears’ Landon Mumford (36-7) took on North’s best wrestler, Cody Bennett, a senior with a 16-7 record.
Mumford didn’t give up a single point in a 5-0 decision win.
At 182, Kolte Poore pinned Scott Jones in only 1:05. Heavyweight Brian Bennett beat that with a pin in 31 seconds over Ross Lucia.
Against Atkins, Mabry (145), Moore (152) and Isaiah King (285) received forfeits in addition to Howard, Sechrist, Blizzard, Duty and Dobson.
In the six matches that were held, the Bears won each weight.
Pack pinned Guillermo Arellano in the first period.
Wilson earned a 14-3 major decision over Daishon Cheeseboro.
Branch made up for his earlier loss with a stick in just 19 seconds over Tristen Murray. At 195, Kendall pinned Kaleel Benjamin in the same short time.
Mumford pinned Gustavo Moreno in 1:07. Poore pinned Marquis Bruton in the second period.
Not only did the two wins give Mount Airy 30 as a team, Braune noted that several wrestlers are either at 30 individual wins or within striking distance of 30.
Mumford leads the team with a 36-7 mark, while Dallas Smith is 32-11. Then Brian Bennett has 28 wins. Moore and Wilson have 27, and Pack and Mason Timmerman have 26 each.
The Bears host Surry Central Friday for the third meeting this season. The Eagles won the first two, but Mount Airy has won nine of 10 since their last meeting Jan. 5.
