PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Lady Cardinals beat South Stokes Friday by a score of 58-43.

Keri Fulp had the first quarter high for the Cards, scoring nine points, and Sydney Mosley had nine at the end of the half. Saura Hannah Wood had scored eight points going into the half.

Head Coach Keith Gunter said, “They played us man to man in the first quarter and were able to carry the ball inside.” However, Gunter said, Emma Slater hit from the outside and so did Sydney Mosley and got in some points.

Hannah Wood of the Sauras was the challenge for the Cards on Friday, Gunter said.

The head coach said Wood had several spurts that slowed down the Cards and kept giving the Sauras life. Gunter said, “Wood got open on some threes and when she got open, she burned us in two three-pointers in the first possession during the fourth and closed the lead.”

Gunter said, “We did not adjust to the zone and failed to execute some things, but in the second half, we were able to use defensive stops. They only had one point in the first six minutes of the third quarter.

“We were not where we wanted to be offensively but were up by six at the end of the third.”

Gunter said, during the fourth, the Cards were able to convert free throws and pull out a win.

Fulp had a game high of 15 rebounds and is averaging 12-13 game, Gunter said.

At the end of game, Gunter said the Cardinals had hit free throws at 70 percent.

Gunter said part of the team’s success is related to the free-throw percentage success.

He said, “We like to attack the basket and get to the free-throw line.”

Gunter said Emma Slater contributed to the tempo Friday hitting three in the opening quarter and again in the fourth to seal the Cardinal win.

“Slater played a good defensive game and played a balance game,” Gunter said.

Gunter said the East Surry Cardinal girls are 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Points scored Friday for the Cards were: Keri Fulp 17; Sydney Moseley 12; Emma Slater 6; Gabbi Jessup 6; Sydney Marion 6; Kacie Markle 4; Lauren Thompson 4; and Laken Bowman 3.

Rebounds for the Cardinals were: Keri Fulp 15; Kacie Markle 7; Sydney Marion 3; Gabbi Jessup 3; Sydney Mosley 2; Laken Bowman 2; and Lauren Thompson 2.

A strong budget proposal that meets board promises
It is refreshing, and worth noting, when elected officials make promises or voice goals and then meet those goals in a tangible, measurable way. That is the case with the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners, whose members once again have shown themselves as people who are committed to governing ...
