PILOT MOUNTAIN — Surry County has achieved a political first with the election of a Pilot Mountain man as the new Republican Party chairman of North Carolina’s Sixth District.

AJ Daoud, the owner and president of Cox-Needham Funeral Home, was selected for that position during the district convention at the Stokes County Courthouse in Danbury last Saturday. It was attended by about 230 voting delegates.

Daoud was in a two-man race with Al Bouldin, a former Republican chairman in Guilford County, and won by a two-to-one margin. They were vying to replace David Ruden, who is retiring as district chairman.

This is the first time in history that a Surry County resident has become a district chairman, according to a news release. The Sixth District, served by Rep. Howard Coble in Congress, comprises 10 counties, including all of Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Granville and Person and portions of Guilford, Alamance, Orange and Durham counties.

Daoud, 56, who has lived in Pilot Mountain for 15 years, said Wednesday that the chairmanship is expected to give Surry a stronger political voice.

“Surry County will start to have more influence in the Republican platform,” he said, along with other political activities at the state level. The Sixth District party chairman is the liaison to Rep. Coble, state GOP leaders and the governor’s office.

Daoud will serve on a central committee that includes 12 district chairmen along with the committee chairman and vice chairman.

The local man said his election to the district GOP post stemmed from a combination of factors.

“I was actually approached by several people,” Daoud said.

His unsuccessful candidacy last fall for North Carolina secretary of state also is thought to have played a role, due to Daoud campaigning for other Republican candidates along the way and gaining favor among the party leadership.

Last weekend marked the first time the district convention has been held in Stokes County, one of four locations hosting GOP conventions across North Carolina this month. “We had a great turnout,” Daoud said.

“I was very blessed and honored by the support of people throughout the district.”

I just wanted to throw in here, that Robespierre attitude is the reason I switched parties also. You know all this talk about a Republican not getting back into the presidency until they change how they're viewed? Well, Robespierre you are the type holding your own party back. Values mean nothing when you combine them with hatred and disrespect for others.

Ashcroft.. I make no apologies for standing tall for the judoe-chrsitian ethic that made this country great. One day even you will stand before your maker and have to account for your Rockefeller republican values... even tho I doubt you are really a republican since your first post was condeming a man for switching parties... certainly not in keeping with your self proclaimed enlightened view points which then throw stones at everyone who drives a pick up truck! You are a walking juxtaposition and a joke!!

Robes, you would be correct in the assumption that I'm not really a Republican. I did, of course, say that is "considered myself a Republican up until recently." I consider myself more of a Libertarian at this point. Both major parties suck. Look at their cooperation, particularly Sen. Graham and McCain, in promoting gun control legislation and their lack of support for and condemnation of Rand Paul's filibuster. Anyway, I condemn the Republican Party's crusade to condemn anything they feel is immoral. Your threatening me to Hell isn't going to change that, either. Sorry, not sorry that we have different views on what small government actually is.

On the topic of Mr. Daoud, I'm not a big fan of him. I've seen him do some very unprofessional things in the times I've been around him that makes me feel like he is a joke. I know he's done some good things for our community, but I just can't get over what I've seen him do.

At 62 years old, a veteran and a lifelong democrat, I find it very interesting that I am being called vile and immoral. If you think about what Robespierre wrote, it is a slap in the face to those who believe in freedom of speech and political discourse. Vote your beliefs. Set out what you believe is vile and immoral, don't hide behind the words.

If you believe in 1)gay marriage, 2) keeping God out of your party's platorm, 3)abortion and 4) transgender "rights" for minor children then you are right where you belong Wiley.

Oh, Robespierre. You are certainly one of the people holding your party back. I considered myself a Republican up until recently. When "small government Republicans" like yourself have no problem allowing government involvement into things you feel are "immoral," and certainly won't affect you, I have a huge problem with it. Don't go around sporting the Gadsden Flag on the back glass of your pickup truck then support legislation prohibiting consenting adults from marrying. Robespierre, I'm sure we agree on more than half of all issues, however, your demeaning attitude toward others, like Wiley128 and any person who may slightly disagree with you, turns me away completely.

At least he had the spine and decency to switch to a party that represents his values. These democrats that run around and claim they are really conservative are the biggest slap in the face to the decent voters of Surry County this area has ever seen. Realize that when you support the democrat party in any form you are supporting some of the most vile and immoral ideas this nation has ever witnessed. Wake up and vote 'em OUT!

I was pleased to be at the convention and participate in the process. I am so proud that Surry County seems to be making changes and seems to be moving forward.

That $137,000 per year until 2047 comes to $5,473,000...and when you divide that by the 370 users, it comes out to be about $14,792 per household. Some brilliant thinking out of Dobson there. What would be helpful is to see some additional reporting from the Mount Airy News on 1) what the original thinking of the county commissioners was at the time they committed to this project, 2) who the champions of it were, and 3) maybe soliciting a comment or two from those champions. That would make for a good article, and it would help to further hold government accountable to the people, which is (or should be) one of the objectives of the press. I think $5.5 million in wasted county taxpayer dollars warrants a bit more detail. How about it, editors? Maybe a follow-up story on this one?

It is terrible that the truth will be deleted to protect a journalist from making the mistake of praising a guy who does not deserve anything but jail time. I think that an apology should be given to your readers for giving the wrong idea about someone who does not take of his child. It is illegal to run false information in a news paper. Thanks for printing that he does have a job by the way, both NY and NC will love to know that.
