PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry’s golf team looks to challenge for the league title this season as five players return.
The Cardinals lost Dustin Holder to graduation, but have seven good players competing for starting spots this season.
Each golfer brings his own mix of skills to the team, said new coach Caleb Gilley.
Gilley has been the volleyball coach for the past two seasons and was named Northwest Coach of the Year back in the fall.
Andrew Millsaps is a strong, all-conference football player, but Jack Edwards might have the longest drive.
Drew Alley, Jordan Vogler and Joseph Marion have good short games.
Also in the mix for starting spots are Brock Jessup and Dustin Hutchens.
These returning players finished third in the state 1A championship last year. Playing at Keith Hills Country Club at Buies Creek, the Cards were just 10 strokes behind Lake Norman Charter at second place. Conference foe Bishop McGuinness finished in first.
Gilley said he expects big things from this group, especially from Alley and Vogler at the top two seeds.
Alley only had one full week of practice because the basketball team played so deeply into the state playoffs, Gilley noted. Still, he’s already striking the ball solidly.
Vogler finished eighth at the state championship, and Alley, Marion and Millsaps all finished in the top 30 out of more than 80 golfers.
With the balance of this team, the players won’t have to put undue stress on themselves. If a golfer has a bad day, then his teammates can pick him up.
A team starts six golfers, but only the top four scores count.
The Northwest Conference season starts today at Bishop McGuinness’ home course of Pine Knolls in Kernersville.
