Cheryl Fielder Largin is the recipient of the 2013 Administrative Professional of the Year Award. Largin is employed by Surry Community College as the administrative assistant to Dr. David Shockley, president of SCC. If an event could be deemed successful by the huge amount of smiles, cheers, and laughter in a room, Wednesday’s Administrative Professional Day Luncheon, held at Cross Creek Country Club in honor of Administrative Professional Day, was quite a success.
The event, which is sponsored by the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, was a celebration of administrative professionals in the community. The Chamber Ambassadors provided entertainment with a theme of “The Price is Right,” complete with games, prizes, and commercials for event sponsors, which brought cheers and laughter from the audience.
The award for 2013 Administrative Professional of the Year was given to Cheryl Fielder Largin, administrative assistant to Dr. David Shockley, president of Surry Community College. Largin is also the assistant for the college’s board of trustees.
Largin, who has worked for Surry Community College for 22 years, received nominations that highlighted her skills and character. A selection of comments on nomination forms included:
- “One of the nicest people I have ever dealt with.”
- “She keeps us on our toes and makes us look good.”
- “Through dedication and hard work, she has been promoted throughout the years.”
- “Her most unique traits are her work ethic, decision making skills, perseverance and her ability to assist in the development of long-range goals.”
- “She prides herself on two things: her family and her work.”
- “She always has a smile on her face and lights up a room when she enters.”
- “She takes pride in whatever she does, and exceeds all expectations of her position.”
Largin said she was left speechless and trembling after her name was announced. She told the audience that she “fell in love with Surry Community” when she walked on the campus 22 years ago. “I feel very humbled and thankful. When you really believe in a place and in the people you work with, it’s easy to be excited to go to work every day. It never even seems like work. It is an opportunity and a blessing,” said Largin.
Largin’s daughter Brittany Kane, who graduated from SCC, surprised her mother by attending the awards along with her son, Largin’s grandson, Braden Kane, who is 5 months old.
Brittany Kane said she was proud of Largin and said her mother “thrives in her position because of her love for the college, her support system from colleagues and friends, and her desire and determination to see the success of the college and the students.”
Largin said she began her career at Surry Community College when her daughter was 4 years old. “I remember going to the interview and I took my daughter with me. She and my mom sat in the car and waited. I got back in and told them I had a good feeling — I said ‘I feel like I’m supposed to be here.’ It was God’s plan for me.”
After a meal of chicken, broccoli, and potatoes and a dessert of key lime pie, attendees enjoyed the entertainment provided by the Chamber Ambassadors.
Glenn Springthorpe of Cross Creek Country Club played the role of Drew Bob Carey Barker, the host of “The Price is Right.” Excited contestants were selected to “come on down” from the audience for the qualifying round, and the winner moved on to play one of the infamous “Price is Right” games: The Clock Game, Hole in One (or Two), and Cliff Hangers. Each contestant received a prize, even if they had a little help from the ambassadors.
In between games, humorous live commercials for business sponsors were performed by chamber ambassadors.
The final moments of the luncheon were highlighted by a rendition of the viral video hit “Harlem Shake” and many audience members joined in the fun, leaping from their chairs and joining the ambassadors who were dancing on stage and throughout the room.
Music for the event was provided by B-Dazzle Productions’ Blanton Youell.
The main event sponsor was Quality Inn, which also provided gift bags for all of those in attendance. Realty World was the program sponsor and the sponsor for the award was Workforce Carolina. The table sponsor was Lowe’s Home Improvement.
