More than a dozen firefighters and five fire department vehicles were on the scene of a structure fire at the parsonage of Grace Moravian Church yesterday morning. While no one was injured, the home, located at 104 Grace Street, sustained about $5,000 in damage as a result of the blaze.

Mount Airy fire crews spent several hours on the scene of a house fire that damaged the parsonage of Grace Moravian Church Saturday morning, according to Fire Chief Zane Poindexter.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 7:30 a.m. and dispatched all trucks in their arsenal to help battle the fire.

Crews were on the scene in less than a minute, Poindexter said, and had the fire under control shortly before 8 a.m.

According to the chief, three fire engines, one ladder truck, one support vehicle, two command vehicles and 17 firefighters were on the scene.

Poindexter said that while the fire is still under investigation, they believe it started in a basement laundry room.

“When we arrived on the scene, smoke was visible from both the top floor of the home and the basement,” he said.

Firefighters entered the structure and quickly got the blaze under control, but Poindexter said firefighters weren’t taking any chances.

“We dispatched everything we had to this fire, every ladder truck and pumper. All our trucks and engines are on the scene,” he said, noting that crews from both Franklin and Four Way volunteer fire departments were also standing by to assist if necessary. “It was a full dispatch.”

No one was reported injured in the fire, although damage from the blaze was listed at around $5,000 in damage to the home, and about $3,000 to contents of the home.

Emergency responders from Surry County EMS and the Mount Airy Rescue Squad were on the scene, as well as workers from Duke Energy, according to Poindexter. The Mount Airy Police Department assisted fire crews with traffic control.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, and Poindexter said an investigation is under way.

Is gay Boy Scout issue germane to the Real World?
Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
