PILOT MOUNTAIN — Drew Wilson pitched a complete game and contributed at the plate as East Surry beat Bishop McGuinness 4-1 Tuesday.

Wilson allowed just one unearned run in seven innings and hit a two-run single in the third inning that broke a 1-1 tie.

His single in the fifth inning provided an insurance run.

The Cardinals hit the ball solidly all game, but the Bishop outfielders chased down several balls.

The Villains scored one in the first inning, but the Cards answered in the second inning.

After Bishop drew a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second.

Bishop tried to steal third, and catcher Madison Chilton’s bad throw allowed the runner to score.

Chilton made up for that by slamming a double into the gap in left.

Chilton has been hitting the ball hard of late, and one of the players joked that Chilton’s hot bat burned his fingers when he picked it up.

Scott Meredith hit an infield single to put runners on the corner.

Chilton’s courtesy runner, Preston Smith, then scored off a sacrifice fly by Cody Ashburn.

In the third inning, Logan Sheets hit a long fly to right-center that the racing center fielder couldn’t bring in. Sheets wound up on third with a triple.

Jeremy Gilley walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Wilson’s single. That made it 3-1.

The Cards had runners on base in the fourth inning, but couldn’t score.

Cody Ashburn walked, and Seth Brim hit a grounder to short. The ball might have been a double play, but the fielder bobbled the ball, then threw a bouncer to first that the first baseman couldn’t pull in.

With two runners aboard, however, the next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the threat.

In the fifth, Gilley hit a single to right and stole second again. Wilson then hit an RBI single for a 4-1 score.

Courtesy runner Casey Marion stole second, but then got doubled off the bag when the center fielder made a nice catch of a sinking line drive by Chilton.

Bishop got two runners on in the sixth.

A ground ball to Scott Meredith at short looked like a double play, but on a bang-bang play at first, the runner was safe. That put players at the corners, but Wilson jammed the next batter to create a weak liner to Meredith for the third out.

Wilson said in the bottom of the sixth that he wanted to finish the game.

He drew a ground out, then wrapped things up with two strike outs.

The Cards host Elkin on Thursday in a nonconference match.

Is gay Boy Scout issue germane to the Real World?
Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
