The Mount Airy tennis team beat North Surry by a score of 5-4 after the match came down to the wire with the singles matches ending in a score of 3-3 just before doubles competition began.

At the first seed, Mount Airy won after Mitch Kessler won 6-0, 6-0 over Samuel Holder. North Surry won at the second seed after Austin Barker won 6-2, 6-2 against Justin Leonard.

Bear Sam Brown won in a tiebreaker match over Corbin Willard with scores of 2-6, 7-5, 10-6. At the fourth seed, North Surry’s Ryan Critz beat Blake Hensley 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Mount Airy took the fifth seed win with Jack Marion winning over D.J. Boyles with scores of 6-7, 6-3, 10-8. Alex Jones won for North Surry at the sixth seed over Robert Blizard after a veteran comeback with scores of 7-6, 2-6, 12-10.

For doubles, Mount Airy won at the first seed spot after Kessler and Hensley won 10-4 against Holder and Barker. At the second seed, Leonard and Brown won for the Bears by a score of 10-7 against Critz and Boyles.

North Surry won at the third seed spot after Jones and Willard rallied back to win the victory 10-7 against Marion and Gentry Williamson.

Bears Head Coach Rodney Pell said, “We were able to finish enough close matches to earn a hard-fought victory.”

In singles, Brown put the Bears ahead after he rallied from a second set 4-5 deficit to win 7-5 and then won in a tiebreaker 10-6. Marion gave Mount Airy a 3-1 team lead with a split sets victory and a rally to win a tiebreaker 10-8.

Jones for the Greyhounds then fought his way from a 6-9 deficit to win over Blizard 12-10 in a tiebreaker set putting the teams even in singles.

Greyhounds Head Coach Drew Belton said both teams battled hard all day and said his team rallied with heart during three set matches. Belton said he was proud of his team especially, knowing the matches were that close.

Belton said, “Alex Jones really stepped up.” Jones, a freshman, came back from a deficit of 9-6 deficit in a third set tiebreaker match to win 12-10.

On Thursday, North Surry will play at East Wilkes and Mount Airy will play at East Surry.
