For the second day in a row, North Surry’s bats struggled as the Lady Greyhounds lost to West Wilkes 8-0.

The Hounds fell 1-0 to North Stokes on Tuesday.

After impressive wins against West Stokes, East Surry and Surry Central, the Hounds fell to 6-3 in Northwest Conference play.

Pitcher Marlee Bunker kept North in a scoreless tie through three innings, then the Lady Blackhawks broke through for three runs in the fourth.

The Hounds’ defense has been very good at times this season, but a couple of errors helped the Hawks add three more runs in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, a West Wilkes batter reached on a single, then took second on an outfield error. She went to third on a passed ball and made it home on a bloop single just past the second baseman.

North Surry wasn’t scoring, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying. The Hounds made solid contact many times, but couldn’t drop balls in.

For example, North hit three straight balls hard in the sixth inning without getting a run.

Leadoff hitter Molly Martin slammed a line drive to center, but right at the fielder who made the catch.

Bailey Culler hit a line drive down the right-field line and legged out a triple.

Bunker hit a hard ball to right, but the outfielder made the catch moving toward the infield and fired a ball home quickly enough that Culler didn’t try to tag up at third.

On the next play, Culler was picked off third by the catcher to end the inning.

The Hounds will look to right the ship on Friday as they host the Lady Sauras.

South Stokes is an interesting team, going 4-1 at home, but just 1-6 away. The only home loss for the Sauras was a 6-3 defeat to North Surry in the first meeting March 8. They have lost three straight in the Northwest Conference, including an 11-0 blanking at Surry Central.

After South Stokes, the Hounds will host Mount Airy on Tuesday. In their first meeting, North Surry won 18-0, but the Lady Bears have improved since then.
