DOBSON — The Surry Community College baseball team played Danville Community College at home in a double-header splitting the games 1-1 on Saturday in a spring-like balmy Saturday at the SCC Knights home field. Taylor Reeves scored the first home run of the season for SCC.

SCC won by a score of 8-2 over DCC in the first game, and DCC returned the favor with a 7-4 win with Wesley Helsabeck and Daniel Elliot pitching for Danville in the second game.

SCC Head Coach Jamie Lowe said Keon Holt at third base, short stop Ashton Fleming, and Kyle Allred had all around good hits and also did well in fielding the ball.

“Keon really hit well at the plate in both games, and played a good defensive game at third base. He had the best day of anybody,” said Lowe.

Assistant Coach Tim Collins said the team moved to a 4-7 record in the conference, saw good intensity in the first game, and will look for that intensity in Sunday’s game.

Both coaches said Demetrus Ingram pitched well in the first game. Collins also said the team played good defense in the first game win.

In both games, Kyle Allred had five hits total and Keon Holt got in four RBIs and had four hits. Collins said outfielder J.T. Tuttle “played good defense in the first game.”

Both coaches for SCC said the loss in the second game was partially due to a lack of that same intensity and “defensive lapses.”

Demetrus Ingram started as SCC pitcher opening up the first inning by throwing three strikeouts against Danville along with Jacob Barber at the catcher position.

Ashton Fleming, who played short stop, led in the batting line-up for SCC, followed by outfielder Kyle Allred, Sawyer McLamb, and first baseman Taylor Reeves.

Allred got on base first for SCC with a single, followed by a single by McLamb. The rest in the opening line-up got solid hits, but they were fielded by DCC for outs.

In the top of the second, SCC made a critical play when pitcher Demetrus Ingram fielded a ball to Travis Fetter at second base who got the final out sending SCC back to bat and no score yet on the board.

The first scores came all at once in a package of three during the bottom of the second inning. Outfielder Cole Penn got to first on a walk, and Holt got on second with a baseline hit and an error by Danville. Zach Winkler was then walked and the Danville pitcher Jason Kelly got busy testing the SCC runners.

Penn was the first run scored after he scored on a pass ball, then Holt, after stealing second base, got to third on a pass. J.T. Tuttle then slammed a line drive and brought in Holt as a RBI. Then later in the line-up, centerfielder Kyle Allred slammed a line drive between second and third and got a steal to second. Ben Wilson then slammed a hit to outfield that brought in Allred on a RBI and put SCC ahead for the first time in the game by a score of 3-0.

In the fourth inning, DCC fielded efficient hits by SCC in the infield and looked to be quickly turning around the inning to after making a double play at second and at first base. However, a solid hit by catcher Jacob Barber got him a double and then a line drive by Zack Winkler sent Barber home for an RBI and a 4-0 score over DCC. Tuttle then made a terrific bunt and brought in Winker. Next, Allred hit hard to right field and Tuttle got home. DCC finally got the third out but only after SCC scored three runs in what had looked like a promising inning for DCC.

Centerfield Kyle Allred made a great catch at centerfield to open up the fifth inning for SCC. Danville then capitalized on several infield errors by SCC and DCC got in its first two scores after Brandon Mitchell slammed a hit far right of centerfield and brought in two RBIs.

A shutout was prevented for DCC with Mitchell’s hit, which made the score SCC 6-2 at the top of the fifth. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, DCC had a quick three down, and got in to bat.

Sam Laws of SCC took over as pitcher in the top of the sixth and the DCC outfield rallied with three consecutive catches to get back in to bat. Taylor, Reeves and and Jacob Barber all responded on defense and got one out a piece for a three up and down scenario.

The final two runs were scored after Holt got a double and Catcher Colby Dishmond hit a single. Tuttle then got Holt in with an RBI to make the score 8-2 SCC.

SCC held DCC the last of the innings with exceptional defensive plays and great outfielding awareness.

In the second header, DCC Wesley Helsabeck started pitching followed by Daniel Elliot, and DCC hit well with the score 4-0 in the third inning. Sam Laws and Zack Winkler also pitched for SCC and Colby Dishmond played catcher.

Reeves hit a homerun for SCC, the first of the season, and it made the score 4-3 Danville. The game ended with Danville getting the victory of 7-4.

The SCC Knights will play game three at Angus Tucker field on Sunday at 1 p.m. to decide the winner of the split on Saturday. Next week the team will play Brunswick Community College next Saturday and Sunday.
