The Lady Greyhounds showed they can grind out a win by beating Winston-Salem Prep 31-24 Friday night.
For most of the first half, the two teams combined for more turnovers than field goals, or even total points.
Both teams showed active hands, creating deflections and steals all over the floor.
North Surry pulled ahead 6-2, but had six turnovers in the first four and a half minutes. Those turnovers started to help the Lady Phoenix score, and the visiting team went on a 13-2 push through the rest of the first quarter and midway into the second quarter.
Then North Surry put together seven straight points to take the lead going into halftime 17-15.
In the opening minute of the second half, Prep’s Mychala Wolfe hit a spinning shot off the glass to tie the game at 17-all.
However, that would be the last field goal for the Phoenix for more than 13 minutes.
The Hounds finally began to find cracks in the full-court pressure and started to convert. They outscored Prep 14-3 over the rest of the third quarter and half of the fourth for a 31-20 lead.
Then Wolfe scored four points in the final 1:16 to make the final margin seven points.
All 31 points came from the Hounds’ starting lineup. Erin March led with eight, Kristina Rumplasch seven and Malaya Johnson and Jordan Badgett six each. Maddison Hawks added four.
Johnson added 11 rebounds, six blocks and six steals.
Wolfe led Prep with six points, all in the second half.
“It was not a pretty game,” admitted Coach Shane Slate.
“We were pretty solid on defense, but we were not good at all on the offensive end,” he said. “Then when we had chances to finish around the basket, we didn’t play very strong.”
With all the tipped passes, the Hounds only managed seven assists as a team, he noted.
Still, the win improves North Surry to 11-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Northwest Conference. The Hounds travel to Bishop McGuinness on Tuesday.
