The Mount Airy swim team won in both the girls and boys swim meets against Surry Central on Monday in the Bears’ last home meet of the season. The Bears capped off senior night with flowers presented to the girls at the swimming blocks. The conference meet will be on Friday for the boys and Saturday for the girls.

The Bears team, both boys and girls, each racked up 102 points to take victory in an unusual winning combination against the Golden Eagles. Head Coach Jay Williams said he had never had both boys and girls to score the same amount of points in a swim meet. The Surry Central boys finished with 57 points and the girls with 68.

Williams said, “Both the boys and girls swam really well, I was really happy. They are coming along and are where we expect them to be at this point.”

The coach said several of the swimmers are tapering into what he described as structure workouts designed to prepare them for the conference, regional and possibly state swim meets.

Williams said, “We taper them to peak before regionals and states and they should get progressively faster. This is dependent on the swimmer doing what they are supposed to do.”

The match before the conference meet yielded the desired results from his team, Williams said.

Both John Dinkins and Blake Hensley got a consideration time for the regionals and William Judd got a consideration on the 200 IM during the match against Surry Central, Williams said.

The coach said it is rewarding to hear confirmation from his swimmers at this stage in the season. It is nice to hear the kids say, “You finally made a believer out of me,” Williams said.

The team is a young one with great depth behind the seniors, Williams said.

He also was looking for consistency before next week’s conference match and the team delivered, Williams said.

Blake Bond dropped nine seconds off the 100 freestyle and Mason Epperson dropped 2.25 seconds off the backstroke, both significant drops and exciting to see, Williams said.

The Mount Airy boys have a 5-3 record and girls moved to 6-2 after the meet on Monday against Surry Central.

First place on Monday for the girls went to: MAHS 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:08.71 (automatic time); MAHS Emma Harrison 200 free 2:12.14 (automatic); SCHS Christine Hawks 200 yard IM, 2:31.79 (automatic); MAHS Lizzie Pell 50 yard free 29.18 (consideration); SCHS Christine Hawks 100 butterfly 1:07.57; MAHS Lizzie Pell 100 yard free, 1:04.84; MAHS Catherine Scott 500 free 6:29.54 (consideration); Emma Harrison 100 yard backstroke 1:06.91 (automatic); Sydney Peavy 1:19.90 (automatic); and MAHS 400 yard relay team 4:24.34 (consideration).

First place in the boys swim meet went to: MAHS 200 yard relay, 2:03.56 (consideration); MAHS John Dinkins 200 yard free 2:27.64; MAHS William Judd 200 IM 2:48.67 (consideration); SCHS John Belcher 50 yard freestyle 26.21 (consideration); MAHS 100 yard butterfly 1:15.53 (consideration); MAHS Blake Bond 100 yard freestyle 1:00.23 (consideration); SCHS Jeremy Dixon 500 yard freestyle 8:00.37; MAHS relay freestyle team 1:52.69; SCHS team 200 freestyle relay 2:16.46; MAHS Mason Epperson, 1:12.65 (consideration); MAHS William Judd 1:20.57 (consideration); and MAHS 400 freestyle relay team 4:23.43 (consideration).

Surry Central Head Coach Dara Kowalcik said she would be counting on her strong butterfly swimmers in the conference meet and expected to have fun.
