Authorities have identified 18-year old Dakota Pittman of Mount Airy as the motorcycle operator killed in an accident Sunday morning on Old Creed Road.

Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said the accident occurred at 10:41 a.m.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrolman J.M. Atkins, Pittman was driving the motorcycle east on Old Creed Road in the Siloam area. A Hyundai driven by 39-year old Charles Henry Murray III also of Mount Airy was traveling west and slowed to turn off of Old Creed Road on to Holyfield Drive on the left side of the highway.

Atkins indicated that Murray did not see Pittman and turned in front of him. Pittman laid the motorcycle down and slid into the right side of the Hyundai. Pittman was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

Pittman was treated at the scene and airlifted by AirCare to Northern Hospital of Surry County and then to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, where he later died.

Kendra Williams, 26, of Mount Airy, the passenger in the Hyundai, was in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time of the collision. She was transported to Northern Hospital and then to Baptist for treatment of her injuries. Murray refused treatment at the scene and was not injured.

Officials at Wake Forest Baptist said Monday afternoon that Williams was listed in good condition.

Pittman was a competitive motocross racer and played basketball with the Surry Runnin’ Patriots homeschool basketball team.

The incident is still under investigation by Atkins. He said once his investigation is completed, it will be turned over the the District Attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed.
