A police investigation of a recent stabbing arising from a domestic disturbance has led to charges against a Mount Airy couple.

The disturbance was reported late on the night of Oct. 19, prompting members of the city police department to respond to 329-A Taylor St., where a woman allegedly had stabbed a man in the side.

Benjamin “Jason” Gates, 38, subsequently was found on foot on nearby Willow Street, where the Surry County EMS treated him for what were described as critical wounds. Gates later was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem and listed in stable condition.

Police discovered that he had been stabbed in an altercation with Summer York, 31.

No charges were immediately issued in the incident, pending an inquiry by the city police Criminal Investigation Division lasting more than a week.

That investigation led to charges being announced this week against both Gates and York.

York was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury, related to the stabbing of Gates.

He is accused of domestic assault on a female, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying concealed weapons.

Both York and Gates have had their first court appearances and are scheduled to be in Surry District Court again in mid-November.

In the meantime, each is free on an unsecured bond.
