• Bricks and an ax were used in an attempt to break into a West Lebanon Street business, according to Mount Airy Police Department reports. The crime was discovered Sunday at Smokin’ Tobacco Pipes and More by an employee of the store. Along with throwing bricks at the glass front door, some type of ax — possibly a bush ax — was used to strike at the lock and glass. Police records indicate that the attempt to gain entry was unsuccessful, with no property listed as missing, but damage estimated at $500 occurred to the metal-framed entranceway.

• A break-in of a motor vehicle occurred Monday at the home of Brittany Dawn Lawson on Newsome Street, where her unsecured 1988 Ford Mustang was entered — enabling the hood to be unlatched. The car’s battery, valued at $80, was then stolen.

• Jimmy Cole Pike, 23, of 112 Westwood Drive, was arrested Tuesday as a fugitive from justice from Patrick County, Va., where he recently was indicted on a charge of selling stolen property. After being taken into custody at his residence on the outstanding warrant, Pike was held in the Surry County Jail under a $30,000 secured bond pending a first court appearance.

• A break-in at the residence of Tracy Lynn Gwyn on Marshall Street on Dec. 3 netted the theft of an Acer laptop computer, $500 in cash, birth certificates, Social Security cards, a driver’s license and other property.

• Ryan Nicholas Harrison, 40, of 7859 Highway 268, Dobson, was charged with four break-in-related felonies stemming from crimes at two drugstores in the early morning hours of Dec. 4. During a security check by police at Rite Aid on East Lebanon Street, Harrison was found behind the pharmacy, where he allegedly had removed the meter from the power supply, causing damage. He also was linked to another incident at Wally’s Pharmacy on Old Rockford Street, where the meter had been removed from the power supply and an attempt was made to cut the lock off the front door of the business.

Harrison was charged with two counts of attempted breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and possession of a firearm (a shotgun) by a convicted felon. He was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond and is slated to be in Surry District Court on Jan. 14.

• Mitchell Ralph Arrington, 55, of 1482 Fancy Gap Road, was cited for allowing a dog to run at large in violation of a city ordinance after a Dec. 2 incident in which the animal that was not leashed bit a woman on her legs. The victim was identified as Pamela Ann McKenzie, who lives on nearby Chatham Road. Arrington is scheduled to appear in District Court on Feb. 6.

• Police learned on Dec. 2 that three tires had been cut on a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban owned by Jose Luis Juarez Nunez of Jonesville, which also had the paint scratched on the driver’s side, a total of $800 in damage. The incident occurred during the nighttime hours while the vehicle was at a residence on Circle Drive.
