DANBURY — Surry Central wrestling defeated North Stokes 48-24 in conference action Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles won five of the eight matches that took place.

The Eagles gave up a forfeit at 132 as Uriel Secundino was unable to go. Then the Vikings gave up forfeits at 113 to Garrett Johnson, 195 to Bryant White and 220 to Humberto Moreira.

Neither team had anyone at 106. Then with Mason Snow out sick at 126, Kevin Pack moved up to take his place, and both teams had no one at 120 as well.

Pack pinned Paul Cross in 1:30 as all five Eagle wins came by fall.

At 138 Raymond Dance nearly equaled Pack’s time with a pin of Zach Johnson in 1:32.

“Pack looked good,” said Coach Stephen Priddy. “Raymond’s been really focused lately. He came out and did his thing quickly.”

At 145 and 152, the Eagles gave up falls, but Priddy said both wrestlers did well in defeat.

Tyler White was holding his own for the whole first period, but then he got caught in a hold by Trinity Fain and pinned with just four seconds before the buzzer, the coach said.

Dallas Smith battled with Hunter Moorefield, but also was pinned late in the first.

At 160, Zack Martin pinned Matt Chesnet in 1:29.

“Zack looked good,” said Priddy. “He keeps improving every time.” The sophomore is now 25-12 on the year.

Hunter White, a freshman at 182, pinned Scott Jones in 3:01. At heavyweight, Wes Brown pinned Ross Lucia in 37 seconds.

At 170, Cody Bennett is North Stokes’ top wrestler. The senior was 14-10 last year and has improved to 14-5 this year.

Still, Calvin Inman battled until the middle of the second period before giving up a fall.

“You’ve got to love Calvin’s work ethic,” said Priddy, adding he isn’t the most athletic wrestler on the team, but if everyone else worked as hard as he does, the team could be undefeated.

As it is, the Eagles improved to 23-8, while the Vikings fell to 2-12 (with results of their match with Grayson County, Va., unreported).

That is a better winning percentage than the team had last year, the coach noted. And, he added, the Eagles still have a chance to make noise in the dual-team playoffs, if they can get a wild card.

The team has a 10-day break between the Vikings and the next opponent, Bishop McGuinness.

In practice, the team will work on honing technique, but mostly the coach is just hoping to get healthy after bouts of cold and flu bugs hitting the squad.
