PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Cardinals defended home turf on Tuesday and outwrestled the Mount Airy Bears winning by a score of 48-25.
Cardinals Head Coach Darrin Haywood said, “I knew it was going to be a tough match coming in.” The Cards advanced to a 12-10 record Tuesday night after defeating the Bears.
Haywood said East’s lightweights did the job for the team and started out the momentum for the Cards.
“The match of the night was Jimmy Speer versus Triston Mabry and both gave it all they had,” said Haywood.
The Speer-Mabry match went into overtime and ended with a 7-5 score.
Haywood said the Cards were fortunate to get the take down and win in the match that helped to be a deciding factor in the Cards win.
The Cardinal coach said he warned heavier weights early not to get pinned as part of the Cardinal strategy against the Bear team.
Haywood said even though Cardinal wrestler Mitchell Flynt lost a major decision, he still did what was asked of him and did not get pinned.
The Cards coach said wrestling gets into counting points and said the Cardinals played strategy against the Bears, in what was expected to be tough match to begin with.
Haywood said, “As I coach, I preach to seize opportunities and to take advantage of any opportunities.” He said the Cards capitalized against the Bears.
Mount Airy wrestling coach Steve Braune said, “Our kids were not prepared, and we have got to wrestle with more heart and be tougher.” He said the Cards capitalized on Bears mistakes of getting caught rolling on their backs.
The Bears will wrestle Friday at North Surry, said the coach.
The Cardinals will be wrestling West Stokes at home on Friday.
The East Surry match was the second conference match for the Bears, and Braune said congratulations were in order for Coach Haywood of the Cardinals. The Mount Airy record is 26-12.
