This a view of a four-door passenger vehicle as it came to rest in a creek after leaving the roadway traveling north on U.S. 52. Officials indicted that the call for the accident came in after 6 p.m. Monday. Four persons, two male and two female, were injured, and one unidentified female has been pronounced dead in connection with the accident.

PILOT MOUNTAIN — Emergency officials have been on the scene of a fatal wreck on U.S. 52 south of the Cook School Road exit that has left one dead and four others hospitalized.

According to Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton, the call for the accident was received at about 6:18 p.m. The accident occurred on U.S. 52 Northbound between the Pilot Mountain and Cook School Road exits.

He said it appeared the passenger car left the roadway, struck the guard rail and continued on before going over an embankment and landing in the creek. Two patients, one male and one female, were transported locally to Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Two patients also were transported to Winston-Salem, also a female and a male. One female was pronounced dead on the scene. None of the patients’ identities are being released at this time.

Shelton said the Surry County EMS, the Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad, the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department and Bannertown Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the accident. At this time, first responders and firefighters are still on the scene.

The accident is being investigated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
