LOWGAP — A Mount Airy woman was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical but stable condition this morning after a tractor-trailer ran over the front end of her car and then left the scene.

According to John Shelton, Surry County Emergency Services director, the wreck occurred around 9:48 a.m. Debra Lynn Caudill, 53, of Cleve Street, was driving on N.C. 89 in Lowgap when the rear wheels of a tractor-trailer ran over the front end of her car.

Caudill was pinned in the car for around 20 minutes, according to Shelton. Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department and Galax Fire and Rescue worked together to get her out of the car. Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry EMS were also first responders.

Caudill was airlifted by AirCare from the old Beulah School because of the weather. She was taken to the WFUBMC trauma unit.

Shelton said the wreck took place in one of the Snow Bird curves on N.C. 89. He said it appears that a portion of the tractor-trailer was on the wrong side of the road when it ran over Caudill’s vehicle in the sharp curve.

The truck driver continued driving from the scene but later stopped at a nearby business. It is not known if the driver was aware that his back tires ran over the vehicle or if charges will be filed. Trooper A.D. Chambers worked the accident but attempts to reach him for information were not successful.
