For those looking for an inexpensive way to enjoy the holiday season, the musical group Voce will perform a free Christmas concert at the Andy Griffith Playhouse this Saturday.
Started in 2002 by music director Sandy Beam, the group typically performs three times a year. Sharon Gates, president of Voce this year, said she hopes the community will come out to support the group and to enjoy an afternoon of musical delight.
“Voce is a select coral ensemble of local talent from in and around Surry County and southern Virginia. We’ve got everyone from some high school students to senior citizens. A lot of the members are music professionals or educators. Some of them are trained vocalists, but a lot of them are just enthusiastic lovers of music,” Gates said.
This is the group’s Christmas concert called “Christmas Blessings.” There will be a selection of holiday favorites as well as a Christmas Canted by Daniel Pinkham with an eight-piece brass ensemble.
Mark Merritt, a Mount Airy native, has arranged two songs the group will be singing, called “Deo Gratias” and “Tomorrow shall be my dancing day.”
The concert start at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Andy Griffith Playhouse.
“We would love to see every seat full,” Gates said.
