To Surry Community College and the Surry Community College Foundation for establishing a Griggs L. Hampton Scholarship.

Hampton, who died in December, was well-known in the community as a man who raised cash like nobody’s business for various causes. He was also known as a good friend to nearly all who met him, and an ardent supporter of Mount Airy High School sports. By establishing this scholarship, his work will continue to be remembered in a way that does what he loved doing — helping those in need.

To the students in the Mount Airy Exceptional Children’s class, and to their teacher, Jill Brown, for their work in adopting soldiers serving overseas who have no family to contact back in the United States. The students wrote letters to the two soldiers, then have kept in contact with them via email, encouraging them, giving them updates on homelife, and just generally raising their spirits.
