PINEHURST — Six Surry County golfers broke 100, and three made the top six at the 1A/2A state tournament that kicked off Monday.

Despite the bad weather, 13 teams and dozens of individual golfers took part in the first round at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher led the field with a 75, while Elkin junior Mary Francis Hall was second one shot behind at 76.

Grace Yatawara, Salisbury, was third at 77. Then North Surry’s Kasie Tolbert tied for fourth at 79 with Ashley Thompson, Pisgah.

Next came East Surry’s Madison Moore and LeAnn Domitrovits, Croatan, tied for sixth at 82.

Elkin’s Annika Winebarger was tied for 17th with a 91. South Stokes’ Megan Mabe was tied at 20 with a 92.

North’s Gatlin Hiatt was tied for 25th at 95, while her teammate Sarah Holleman was further back at 113.

Tolbert, Hiatt and Holleman gave the Lady Greyhounds a 287, good for sixth place out of 13 teams.

South Stokes was in fifth, just two strokes ahead. Elkin was eighth with a 297.

East Surry had just two players in the field and was unable to compete as a team.

Salisbury led the field with a 246, 29 strokes better than the next-closest threesome.

The rains came and went, but the wind was constant, noted East Surry Coach Chad Freeman.

Moore was among the first group that teed off at 9 a.m. when the temperature was still frigid, noted Freeman. However, she ended up having it better than some because the winds grew worse and the ground wetter as the day went along.

Teammate Lindsay Chamblin teed off in the last group at 11:10.

“She actually did the best she’s played all year long,” Freeman said of Chamblin. Starting on the 10th hole, Chamblin shot a stellar 45 on the back nine. Then with conditions worsening, she still shot a 51 on the front nine to finish tied for 27th at 96.

Madison played a superb round except for trouble on a three-hole segment of the front nine, the coach explained.

Moore shot 43, but was actually just 1-over-par after five holes, he said. Then she had a double bogey, bogey and triple bogey on holes seven, eight and nine that dropped her out of the top three scores.

Then, she put those holes behind her and played a great back nine. With the winds picking up, she still shot a 39.

For South Stokes, after Mabe’s 92, the Sauras’ other three players also broke 100. Brooke Martin shot 96, Brooke Kiger 97 and Nicole Rogers 98.

Rogers has the earliest tee time of any area players today as she tees at 9:20 a.m.

Chamblin and Moore tee off back-to-back at 10:20 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

South Stokes and North Surry have one girl in each of the last three groups at 10:40, 10:50 and 11 a.m.
