Normally, I love rain. Love the way it feels, love the way it sounds, love the way it smells, love the way it looks.
This week, however, I find myself wishing the remnants of Hurricane Ida would just move on elsewhere. Perhaps I’m just grumpy because I had a long weekend last week and Monday was kind of like a shock to the system. But I would still like to vent.
It’s time to dish out some torrential showers of my own — showers of sarcastic thanks, that is, to Hurricane Ida.
Thank you, Ida, for:
- Creating a new creek in my back yard, turning it into a soggy mess. The small creek that normally flows beside my house now approaches the yard banks, threatening to merge with the newly formed creek into one giant puddle of muddy water.
- Raining out the Veterans Day parade and service to be held in Mount Airy. I was looking forward to my first Veterans parade in Mount Airy and the chance to wear red, white, and blue as I shot photos of veterans downtown. That dream was cut short.
- Turning my hair into a wet and messy disaster on Monday, the one day that I actually decided to straighten my naturally unruly hair. My hopes of looking semi-cute for a change were dashed. If only I had looked out the window before heating up the straightening iron.
- Causing me to nearly wreck on a curvy back road in Stokes County earlier this week. A slow speed can only help so much when a monster curve pairs with a monster puddle. Ida, you reduced me to tears after that incident.
- Cutting off my power for a few minutes while I was in the shower yesterday, forcing me to lather in the complete dark, in addition to knocking over several bottles while looking for the right shampoo.
- Keeping me awake until 3 a.m. the other night when I really wanted to go to sleep. The wind-driven bushes outside my house scratched against my window all night long, creating a hideous sound.
So there you go, Ida. I hope you’re happy with all of the things you’ve put me through this week.
And Old Man Winter, I have some advice for you:
You’d better think twice before sending any torrents of rain, snow, sleet, or ice this winter. This reporter has had enough crazy weather for the year.
