DOBSON — Surry Community College will offer a dance class as well as an automatic transmissions class. The dance class will be at the SCC Pilot Center, 612 E. Main St. in Pilot Mountain.

The dance class will meet on Thursdays beginning Jan. 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will end Feb. 14. Instructors are Bill and Carole Bryant. The featured dances for beginners will be Foxtrot and Swing. Partners are encouraged, but not required.

This class will include one hour of instruction for beginning students, one hour of practice for any skill level, and one hour of instruction for non-beginners. Preregistration is required. Tuition is $51 per student. Persons interested in taking this class or want more information, call Sonnie Hardy at 386-3229 or Terri Cockerham at 386-3244.

The Corporate and Continuing Education Division of Surry Community College also has scheduled a new class in Automatic Transmissions beginning Jan. 9 and ending May 6.

The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Dobson campus in the V building shop. The class will be taught by Adam Vaughn. The class is limited to 12 students.

Operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of automatic transmissions and/or transaxles will be covered in this class. Topics include hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical/electronic operation of automatic drive trains and the use of appropriate service tools and equipment. Upon completion, students should be able to explain operational theory and diagnose and repair automatic drive-trains.

This class will be held primarily in a lab setting so students receive the full benefit from a hands-on environment. Students may bring in their own projects. However, space will be an issue. If at all possible, students should remove and re-install the transmissions outside of class. Vehicle lifts are available and will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis.

A small set of tools is required (sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc.). Specialty tools will be provided in most instances. If a student wishes to bring in their own transmission, they will need to provide all parts and materials necessary to complete the rebuild.

Tuition for the class is $178, North Carolina residents age 65 years and older pay $3. Registration is open at this time and is available online. Persons may register online by going to www.surry.edu, click on the KnightLife icon, then Continuing Education.

More information on this class may also be obtained by calling Terri Cockerham at 386-3244.
