PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry Central Swim team is getting ready for its Thursday home opener against North Surry.
“We’ve got depth on the girls’ team and a lot of talent and the largest guys’ team ever,” said Surry Central Head Coach Dara Kowalcik.
The girls’ team finished third in the conference last year and the boys’, which only lost one senior, finished fourth. “This group works hard and is willing to learn,” said Kowalcik. The boys have extra depth in both the freestyle and breaststroke this year, the coach added.
Kowalcik said that the girls’ team had four qualifiers for the state meet last year and one of them, Christine Hawks, is returning this season.
Last year Hawks finished 15th in the state in the butterfly stroke and said it is her favorite because it has always been a challenge. She will be a top competitor for the Golden Eagles swim team in the 200 I medley, 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay, according to the coach.
“My goal is one minute flat in the butterfly,” said Hawks.
Surry Central has sent kids to state in the swim meet every year, Kowalcik said.
“Our motto is go big or go home,” said Kowalcik.
The team will compete in its season opener at the Armfield Civic Center on Thursday beginning at 6 pm.
