KINSTON — Surry Community College won both games in a tri-match Saturday at Lenoir Community College.
The Lady Knights breezed past the home school, defeating Lenoir 3-0. Then, they dropped the first set 20-25 before defeating Louisburg College 3-1 in Region X volleyball action.
Against Lenoir, former Greyhound Brooke Johnson recorded 10 kills to go along with six blocks. Nicole Rumplasch and Alexis Allen each contributed seven kills offensively while Sara Parker notched 31 assists
SCC was led defensively by Rumplasch with seven blocks while libero Alysha Shelton added 20 digs. Against the Lancers, the Lady Knights jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back in taking the first set 25-5. Surry held off a pesky Lenoir squad in the second set 25-17 before finishing off the match in the third set 25-15.
Against Louisburg, the Knights rallied after that 0-1 deficit to take the second set 25-19. Then the women built a 2-1 lead over the Lady Hurricanes after a strong third set 25-15 before winning out 25-16.
Lindsay Marinan led the Lady Knights with 13 kills while Johnson and Samantha Dimmette each contributed five kills. Parker dished out a team-high 29 assists to go along with 13 digs and four kills.
Defensively, the Lady Knights got stellar play from Shelton with 30 digs while defensive specialist Madison Jessup notched 27 digs. Rumplasch turned in an outstanding performance at the net with 15 blocks while Jennifer Coe and Johnson each recorded six blocks.
On Friday, the Lady Knights dropped a pair of matches against Pitt Community College and Spartanburg-Methodist College. In the opener, Surry dropped the first two sets to Pitt, 25-20 and 25-22, before taking the third set, 25-21. The Lady Knights would drop the match to the Bulldogs in the fourth set, 25-15.
Marinan and Rumplasch led Surry with seven kills each while Parker dished out 25 assists. Shelton recorded 19 digs while Jessup tallied 13 digs for the Lady Knights. Rumplasch contributed seven blocks to lead Surry.
In the Friday nightcap, Surry dropped three straight to Spartanburg-Methodist by scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-23. Marinan and Parker led the Surry offense with five kills each while Jenna Clement recorded 14 assists. Defensively, Rumplasch tallied 12 blocks while Jessup led Surry with ten digs.
Surry (11-4, 5-3 Region X) travels to Wake Tech on Friday for a Region X tri-match with the Eagles and Brunswick Community College starting at 3 p.m.
