• Two people have been charged in connection with an incident last week involving a variety of clothing and toiletry items being stolen from Walmart and returned for a gift card, according to Mount Airy Police Department reports. Sonja Renee Pack, 19, of 268 Maple Hollow Road, is accused of obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony; possession of stolen goods; second-degree trespassing; and possession of Schedule II and IV controlled substances.
Teofila Diana Ruiz, 18, of 147 Cone Lane, is facing offenses of larceny, possession of stolen goods and second-degree trespassing. The women had been banned from the store before last Tuesday’s incident, resulting in the trespassing violations. The property, valued at about $75, was recovered. Pack was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond, while Ruiz is free on an unsecured bond of the same amount. Both are to appear in District Court on Aug. 8.
• The new Sheetz store on Rockford Street was the scene of a crime last Tuesday involving larceny and the obtaining of money by false pretenses. Someone took InTune earphones, Pugs Gear sunglasses and Motor Trend jumper cables from the store and later presented them for a refund. The items were valued at about $45.
• Benjamin Shannon Hall, 30, of 4653 Pebble Trail, Dobson, turned himself in last Tuesday on charges of assault, inflicting serious injury; assault with a deadly weapon; and injury to personal property, which had been issued the day before with Christopher Timothy Williams of Dusty Lane as the complainant. Hall is free on a written promise to appear in Surry District Court on Aug. 3.
• Damage estimated at $700 was discovered to a Redbox automated DVD device on July 5 in the vicinity of Dollar General on South Main Street, which involved the glass screen on the machine being broken.
• Police were told on July 5 that a wallet containing $80 and an identification card had been stolen at the Red Barn store by two known suspects. The victim is Maria De Jesus Juarez-Malagon, who lives on Cone Lane.
• The Shikora II restaurant on Rockford Street was the scene of a forcible break-in discovered on July 4, during which damages put at $2,375 occurred to a cash register, metal door and various electrical and telephone cables.
• A break-in and larceny was reported on June 30 at the Asian House restaurant on Rockford Street, where someone used a pry tool to enter the building and took nearly $500 in small bills and quarters.
• Kathy Davis Marquina, 45, of 208 Fran Lane, Dobson, was cited for larceny/shoplifting on June 30 after allegedly concealing various cosmetics items with a value of $600 at Walmart. Marquina is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Aug. 21.
• Property valued at nearly $2,000 was reported stolen on June 29 from the residence of Michael Shane Dodd on Orchard Street. A JVC 42-inch flat-screen television set, Nintendo Wii gaming system and Gateway laptop computer were taken after entry was gained through an unsecured window that was removed. The property was listed as recovered, but there was no explanation or indication of anyone being charged.
• A PNC Bank debit card owned by Kimberly Leigh Thomas of Guinness Lane was reported stolen on June 29, after it was left unattended in an ATM on Andy Griffith Parkway, although the exact location was unclear.
• John Aaron Lankford, 36, of 542 Dry Pond Highway, Claudville, Va., is facing a violation of hit and run, for which he turned himself in on June 29 and was held in the Surry County Jail under a $1,500 secured bond. Lankford is to appear in District Court on Aug. 1 on the violation, for which no other details were listed.
