- Two recent crimes in Mount Airy were perpetrated by someone falsely representing themselves as magazine sellers, according to city police reports.

One incident occurred Thursday at the home of Charles William Snow, an elderly resident of Marshall Street. Two people, one identified as a white female about 18 years old, allegedly stole $20 from Snow in the incident classified by police as a case of larceny as well as obtaining property by false pretense.

A similar crime occurred the day before at a home on Sunset Drive in another section of town. That incident, resulting in a $45 loss to elderly victim Mary Elizabeth Garvey, also involved an 18-year-old white female who apparently was working alone.

No arrest has been in either case.

- Mount Airy police also are investigating a case of someone trying to steal nearly $700 worth of merchandise from Wal-Mart, including a Hewlett-Packard desktop computer and Canopy 400-thread sheets. No arrest has been reported from the incident last Tuesday afternoon, but identifying information on the suspect vehicle — a gold 1998 Ford van — was obtained. The property was recovered.

- A larceny was reported Wednesday by Sharlene Ann France of West Stewart Drive, who told police that a Ryobi 18-volt sawzall set with a battery and charger, a Skil router and a Bosch three-piece router were stolen from her residence last weekend. The property is valued altogether at about $180.

- April Dawn Earles, 35, of Mary Sue’s Safehaven, Mount Airy, was cited for larceny Wednesday after allegedly being caught shoplifting at Wal-Mart. Earles is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Dec. 4.

- A case of financial card fraud also is under investigation by city police, who were advised last Tuesday that someone charged sums of money by unknown means to a Bank of America credit card owned by Doris Evelyn McMillian of Knollwood Drive. Two transactions totaling $516 were involved. The case remains open for further investigation.

- A larceny was reported last Tuesday by James Richard Crump Sr. of Pinnacle, who told police that property valued at nearly $1,600 allegedly was taken by a renter who had moved out of a house he owns on West Easter Drive, sometime between Oct. 22 and last Sunday. Included were a Maytag washer and dryer, a cookstove with a glass top, a woodstove and curtains and rods. The case remains open for further investigation.

- Police were told Tuesday that a silver and orange U-Haul tow dolly valued at $1,600 had been stolen from 89 Service Center on West Pine Street. The property was last known to be secure on Oct. 23. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.

- A break-in of two vending machines and a larceny was reported Tuesday by personnel of Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. A pry tool was used to force open the machines located at the Roses department store, causing damages estimated at $700. About $30 also was removed from one of the machines. The incident occurred sometime between Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 and remains open for further investigation.

- Sherron Montise Candelaria of Pinnacle, who is employed by a local investment firm, reported that a known subject provided false information to obtain property from her illegally last Tuesday. No other details were available about the case that is under investigation.

- Sam Leroy Chamberlain, a Newsome Street resident, told police on Oct. 26 that he was the victim of a common-law robbery. Chamberlain said two unknown white-male suspects held him down and removed his wallet containing various identification and other cards. Police records show that minor injuries resulted from the incident, which remains open for further investigation.
