The Pine Hills Friends Meeting of Ararat is sponsoring an essay contest for local middle and high school youth, with a top prize of $200 available to the winner.
“The social concern essay should be written about a topic of concern for today’s youth,” the group said. Topics may include drugs and alcohol use, bullying, domestic violence, poverty, peace, homelessness, racism, gender equality, family structure, environmental issues, school dropout, cheating and plagiarism.
Other similar topics may be submitted.
The essays must be between 400 and 500 words and will be judged on content, factual correctness, and grammar.
Winners will receive $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. The winners may be asked to give a public presentation of the essay.
Submissions are to be sent to Melva Greene at THE_GREENES@ surry.net or mailed to 381 Greene Road, Dobson, NC. The deadline is Jan. 22.
