MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Doris Irene Gordon Owens, 77, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at the Woltz Hospice Home. Mrs. Owens was born in Surry County, Dec. 22, 1931, to Jessie (Bud) William and Bessie Young Gordon. She graduated from nursing school in 1971. During her career as a registered nurse, Mrs. Owens worked in the office of Dr. J. Dale Simmons, Northern Hospital of Surry County and devoted many volunteer hours with Medical Ministries. Surviving are her dear husband, J.R. Owens of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Donna Owens of Greensboro and Joey and Robin Owens of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Ashley, Joslin, Joshua, Emily Rose and Jeremy; a great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Rose Pruitt; a sister, Charldeen Hawks of Mount Airy; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, George (Cotton) and Teresa Gordon and Larry and Janice Gordon, all of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her twin sister, Dorothy Gilley; and another sister, Catherine Bliss. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Pilot Mountain City Cemetery by the Rev. Buster Sechrist. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at Moody Funeral Home.
