North Surry wrestlers defeated North Wilkes Tuesday, 61-12, with the score not reported until after deadline.

The Greyhounds had already handily handled the Vikings earlier this season and the only difference in Tuesday’s match was an injury withdrawal by Cody McMillian, who was forced to abandon his 112-pound match against Luis Bonilla with a twisted ankle.

Greyhounds coach Eric Jessup said he hopes to have McMillian, a major cog in the team’s dynamic, back in around 10 days.

In the closest match of the night, 140-pound Zack Eller of North Wilkes defeated Ethan Hazzard of North Surry 7-6.

“It was two really good wrestlers going at it,” Jessup said. “Looked like something you see at regionals or states.”

Eller is the defending midwest regional champion in that weight class.

North Surry will next head to the Joe Via Invitational, hosted by South Stokes and featuring some strong competition.

Jessup said going up against the likes of Northwest Guilford, Northeast Guilford and West Wilkes will be a good test for his team.

After taking second place at a tournament hosted by West Wilkes last week, Jessup said he thinks his squad is looking forward at another chance at the Blackhawks.

“I think any time we can take a shot at West Wilkes we’ll always take it,” Jessup said. “It’s always fun. Their coach Brian Brown is a good coach and a good friend of mine, and our kids are pretty good friends. It’s all business on the mat, but before and after, we have a pretty good time. That’s what we want this time of year (competition).”
