North Surry kept its perfect season intact with a 56-6 thrashing of North Stokes Friday night.

The offense continues to impress, scoring at least 20 points in every game, while the defense is holding squads to an average of 12 points per game.

North Stokes likes to throw the ball around, said Coach Danny Lyons. Quarterback Garrett Wood was putting up 290 yards passing a game in leading the Vikings to a 4-1 start.

The defensive secondary has been maligned this year for giving up a couple of big plays, Lyons said. However, against one of the best passing attacks in the state, the Greyhounds held North Stokes to 7 of 26 passing for only 66 yards.

Tripp Miller had two sacks of Wood, and George Rumplasch added another.

Considering the Vikings’ firepower, Lyons said this might have been the best defensive game the Hounds have played in the past four or five seasons.

He said credit goes to defensive coordinator Patrick Taylor and his staff for getting the team ready.

The Vikings rushed 25 times for 135, giving the team 201 total yards. However, North Surry posted 369 yards.

Running back Blaze Acord continues to shine. He had 17 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He reached 1,000 yards for the season in the first quarter as the Hounds built a 14-0 lead.

The home team scored again in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead. Ryan March took a pass 41 yards to the end zone for his first varsity touchdown.

Lyons told his team at the half that with a good passing attack, North Stokes still wasn’t out of the game.

Then on the opening kickoff in the third quarter, Dakota Goss ran 95 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the quarter, fullback Shawn DeHart burst up the middle for a 65-yard TD run. The Hounds led 42-6 by the end of the quarter.

DeHart finished with two carries for 73 yards, and Goss had three carries for 44 yards.

Austin Handy completed two passes in six attempts for 83 yards. Josh Cox had a 42-yard reception.

There was an unfortunate injury late in the game, according to Lyons.

He believed it was #80 Jonah Slate who went down with an apparent neck injury.

The player was able to move his limbs when medical personnel attended him, Lyons said.

The next two weeks are going to be a big test for the team, he said. The big rivalry game with the 5-1 Mount Airy Bears is just two weeks away, but Lyons doesn’t want his team looking ahead.

South Stokes, the next opponent, is undefeated at 5-0, he cautioned.

Lyons said he wants to pack Charlie Atkins Stadium next Friday. It has been a long time since North Surry had a perfect record this late in the year, he noted, and it will be a battle to see who remains perfect at the end of the day.
