LOWGAP — No students were injured Monday afternoon when heavy rains caused contributed to a Surry County School System bus accident.

The incident occurred in the area of Carson Creek Road when the rains caused the bus to drift off the shoulder of the roadway and into a ditch where it then struck a tree.

According to Trooper Stewart White of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 4:26 p.m. Monday. White said no one was transported from the scene for medical attention. All students were released to their parents.

Surry County Emergency Medical Services and Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the call.

Surry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ashley Hinson said that there were seven students on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus was transporting students from Cedar Ridge Elementary School to their homes.

White also estimated damages to the right side of the bus could total $2,000. He said the bus was driven from the scene back to the county garage.
