The Mount Airy Visitors Center was buzzing with tourists who came to take part in the annual Mrs. Wiley’s Tea on Friday during Mayberry Days.

The party is always hosted by the Chamber Chicks who provided lemonade, tea and a variety of cookies.

The Chamber Chicks, made up of Eleanor Atkins, Rita Coleman and Esther Johnson, were joined by Jackie Joseph, who played Sweet Romeena on “The Andy Griffith Show” and Alma Venable who dresses up like Aunt Bea.

Young and old enjoyed not only the refreshments, but the Chamber Chicks’ outfits as well. All of the ladies dressed in their finest dresses and fancy hats.

Several visitors took turns having their pictures taken with the ladies who regularly work at the visitors center.

Sharon and Dan Smith stopped by for some cookies and lemonade. They are attending their first Mayberry Days. They came to Mount Airy from Kansas City, Mo. They said now that they are both retired, they wanted to come check out Mayberry Days.

“‘The Andy Griffith Show’ is one of our favorites. Mount Airy really exemplifies the values seen on the show,” said Sharon Smith.

While in town, they said they have been shopping in the stores downtown searching for gifts for their 12 grandchildren. After visiting with the Chamber Chicks, they headed over to get an autograph from Joseph. They also said they wanted to visit the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History while in town.
