Mount Airy’s girl’s tennis team was eliminated from the state dual competition last night, falling to East Montgomery, 5-4.
Uncharacteristically, the Granite Bears won just two of their singles matches, with only the Bears top two seeds, Jordan Jackson and Ellie Case, picking up points.
Mount Airy coach Scott Kniskern said Thursday’s performance was not a normal one for his team.
“I don’t want to take anything away form them (East Montgomery) because they are a strong team, but typically we don’t lose four singles matches,” Kniskern said. “That just doesn’t usually happen. What our team is built for is that I feel like we can guarantee two doubles wins every time, so if we split singles we can win 5-4. We had a chance. Our two doubles were the only ones that lost and we just coudln’t quite pull it out. It’s hard to win if you can only win two singles matches. It’s tough to win all three doubles and that’s what we had to do. I felt like there were several singles matches we should have won but didn’t. Unfortunately we just couldn’t quite pull them out.”
