A 19-year-old county resident is dead following a motorcycle accident late Sunday morning.

While details are sketchy, Dakota Pittman was driving his motorcycle around 10:41 a.m. Sunday when a vehicle turned in front of him on Old Creed Road, according to John Shelton, emergency services director for Surry County.

Pittman, who was a competitive motorcross racer and who played basketball with the Surry Runnin’ Patriots homeschool basketball program, reportedly struck the vehicle in the passenger side, injuring a female passenger in the vehicle.

The female passenger was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

Pittman was airlifted to Baptist Hospital following the accident, but was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital. Additional information was not available, but the wreck investigation is continuing.
