Mr. Michael Gray “Mike” Lawson, 59, of 114 Mike Lawson Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Monday afternoon, November 5, 2012, at his home. Mr. Lawson was born March 19, 1953, in Surry County, the son of Alvin Roy Lawson and the late Barbara George Lawson. Mike retired as a mechanic from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 38 years of service and was a member of Albion Missionary Baptist Church. He was a former member and chief of the Lawsonville Volunteer Fire Department, and he proudly served as captain of the fire brigade while working at R.J. Reynolds. Mike loved the holidays, especially playing Santa Claus for several churches and civic and community socials. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jonathan Lawson of Mount Airy and Daniel and Sara Lawson of Danbury; three grandchildren, Lilly Lawson and Paul Lawson, both of Mount Airy, and Wyatt Lawson of Danbury; his father, Alvin Roy Lawson of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Gay and Russ Riggan of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth W. and Molly Lawson of Elkin; two nieces, Leah Riggan and Amanda Tackett; two nephews, Matthew Riggan and Andrew Lawson; his fiancée, Vicki Yokley of Pilot Mountain; and two special pets/dogs, Daisy and Bea. In addition to his mother, Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by a niece, Kimberly Lynn Lawson Chambers. The funeral service will be held Friday, November 9, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Mark George and the Rev. Walker Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in the Albion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of his father, Alvin Roy Lawson, 529 Bob Jessup Road, Mount Airy.
