As all good things come to an end, the last session of the Summer Music Series in the Dr. Robert Smith gardens will finish out the season on Sunday with a performance by renowned jazz singer Melva Houston from 5 to 7 p.m.

Houston, who spends her summers in Europe performing, has returned to her home in Mount Airy and is looking forward to seeing all of her friends at this concert.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’m glad to be back. I hope everyone comes out and enjoys the weather. Let’s keep music alive,” said Houston on Tuesday.

According to Ann Vaughn, executive director of the Gertrude-Smith Foundation, which runs the Dr. Robert Smith House where the Blue House Teaching Studio and Gallery is located, the gallery will be open to the public the night of the concert.

Vaughn said she is excited about hearing Houston sing in the park this Sunday.

“Melva always packs the park,” said Vaughn.

Refreshments will be served. Lawn chairs or blankets are encouraged for those who plan to attend.

In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Old North State Winery.
