A 25-year-old Mount Airy man was killed Thursday night after being stuck by an SUV on North Main Street.

Rescuers were dispatched to the intersection of North Main and West Lebanon streets at 8:59 p.m. to the report of a pedestrian being struck, but when they got there, they quickly determined that the man had been driving a moped. Rescuers found the moped wedged underneath the front bumper of a Ford Escape that turned left onto West Lebanon Street.

John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, said he thought the moped driver was traveling southbound on North Main Street when the SUV turned into its path.

According to 911 radio transmissions after the accident, the man was found laying in the road unresponsive. Rescuers began CPR as soon as they arrived on the scene.

The man was taken to Northern Hospital of Surry where he was pronounced dead at 9:33 p.m. Shelton said the man received multiple injuries after rolling up on the hood of the SUV.

The name of the man who was killed could not be released Thursday night as his family was not able to be notified before press time.

Also, a spokesperson with the Mount Airy Police Department said the name of the SUV driver could not be released Thursday night because the accident was still under investigation.

The Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Does the MA News have a direct line to John Shelton? He should take a clue from the MA police and say nothing. "Multiple injuries from rolling up on a hood" is too much information and should be illegal from a medical provider.

Does he just love seeing his name in print? An ego has no place in the medical profession and at the expense of the patient's family.

John Shelton is so full of himself! He craves attention. I've heard from VERY reliable sources that he even goes to the Emergency Room and shows accident & crime scene photos to the staff. I'm sure that is illegal, unethical at best.
